Samsung introduces the first 16GB DDR3 memory modules

Samsung has launched its first 16GB DDR3 memory modules that use a 50 nanometer manufacturing process. Each module uses the higher density and more efficient 2Gb process, which was introduced by the company in last September.
These new 16GB modules are specially designed for servers and allow for up to 192GB of memory to be installed in a typical two-socket server. The company now plans to offer 18 different configurations for its DDR3 memories line for servers.
Although the prices of DDR3 memories are still high, it is expected that those modules will be more popular in the coming years when prices fall because the customers will prefer power savings and higher data transfer rates (regarding power savings, the new Samsung DDR3 modules operate at 1.5 volts, but the company is also offering 16GB RDIMMs that operate at 1.35 volts).
Samsung has made reference to some data from a recent study made by IDC (a market research and analysis firm) that predicts that DDR3 memories would account for 75 per cent of the SDRAM market in the next two years and the 2GB modules will comprise a third of the sales of DDR3 memories.
